WHAT IS PERM?
A hairstyle produced by setting the hair in waves or curls and then treating it with chemicals so that the style lasts for several months. Though perms can be traced back to 1872, the original method involved electric heated rollers rigged up like a chandelier, and was known to burn a scalp every now and then. The first iteration of a "cold wave" perm, like the ones we see today, wasn't invented until 1938.
HOW DOES PERM WORK?
When the hair is permed (and sometimes when straightened) the disulphide bonds (the chemical side bonds) of the hair are broken through a chemical reaction called ‗reduction'. A reduction reaction involves either the removal of oxygen or the addition of hydrogen.
WHEN IS IT TIME FOR A PERM?
Clients that are experiencing slight hair lost or thinning may feel more inclined, perming their hair gives more of a fuller bouncy look.
